Capstone Topics: Defining the Need and Creating Value
Updated: 9/8/2021 10:32 AM by Becky Benishek
Summary
A lecture and assignment describes the entrepreneurial mindset and other issues to consider when defining capstone topics.
Description
A lecture and assignment describes the entrepreneurial mindset and other issues to consider when defining capstone topics. "Connections" are discussed in the context of Steven Johnson's book, "Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation".  Students must write an assignment that references the Strategyzer value proposition canvas.  Several relevant videos are in the slides and folder below.
These materials were used in the Aerospace Capstone Design program, where some projects are defined by students.
Instructor Tips
Though the material could be used in other contexts, this was presented at the start of the Aerospace Engineering Capstone (Senior Design) sequence. At our school, some of the senior design projects are industry sponsored, while others are defined by the students. This opportunity to define their own projects give students a chance to directly apply EM concepts- especially "creating value."

Curiosity
  • Explore a contrarian view of accepted solution
Connections
