ABOUT THE COVER: The feature article about an intrapreneurial internship at Campbell prompted a soup-related image. After first experimenting with a soup- can, we strained letters from vegetable soup, arranging them ever so carefully. And, voila, EMS — entrepreneurially minded soup. For many, the phrase “entrepreneurial mindset” sparks thoughts of startups and new ventures, but the entrepreneurial mindset is bigger than entrepreneurship! It can be applied in every situation in life and work, whether within a company, government, non-profit, or university — everywhere. In fact, the majority of engineering undergraduates won’t start their own ventures after they graduate; they’ll join companies. Every company was once a startup made successful through people with an entrepreneurial mindset. Today, individuals with that same mindset contribute to the continued success of organizations, driving growth and meeting customer and client needs. This issue of KEEN’zine is dedicated to educating that agent of change, the INTRAPRENEUR, “an employee who is given freedom and financial support to create new products, services, and systems,” a compelling definition offered by Sir Richard Branson. While engineers will continue to fill all types of roles from production to research, a focus on creating intrapreneurs is game-changing. Engineers empowered by both technical skills and an entrepreneurial mindset will drive positive change and create value in industry for society and for the world of tomorrow. KEEN is a national partnership of universities with the shared mission to graduate engineers with an entrepreneurial mindset so they can create personal, economic, and societal value through a lifetime of meaningful work.
