EventsTeaching With Impact - Motivation and Mindset

Motivation and Mindset is a workshop designed to help educators develop an understanding of student motivation in the classroom. Equipped with the theory, frameworks, and tools to describe and explain student motivational responses in your own course activities, you will design an intervention to positively shift students' motivations. After the workshop, you will implement your intervention and measure students' motivational responses. Finally, in consultation with the workshop facilitators and coaches, you will reflect on the student motivational shifts you observed, and revise your intervention for continued improvement.

How to participate in Engineering Unleashed Faculty Development:

  1. Register for your workshop
  2. Complete pre-work through a short video introduction and brief exchanges with facilitators and other participants (pre-work opens in April)
  3. Select a candidate project and examine how entrepreneurial mindset applies
  4. Attend your chosen workshop
  5. Develop, deploy, and assess project work over the span of up to one year with one-on-one coaching and consulting
  6. Share results with the Engineering Unleashed community
Additionally, competitive funding opportunities are available to those who successfully complete a faculty development program.

Throughout the program, participants will aim to make positive shifts in the motivation of engineering students engaged in EML course activities and will be able to:

  • Understand different types of motivation
  • Understand how to quantitatively measure motivations
  • Explain students' motivational responses, based on course design, pedagogical, and classroom environmental variables
  • Design an intervention intended to positively shift the motivations of students engaged in any EML course activity
Participants will focus on the following deliverables:
  • Create an EML course intervention and predict how it will impact student motivation
  • Measure and analyze how the EML intervention impacted student motivation
  • Reflect and revise the EML intervention for continual improvement
