Classroom Card #4012
Unveiling Concepts: A mapping of function to form
Updated: 6/5/2024 12:20 PM by Felix Ewere
Reviewed: 2/18/2025 10:57 AM by George Salayka
Summary
Concept Mapping, Function to Form, Entrepreneurial Mindset, System Architecture
Course

Implemented in Aerospace Engineering Senior Design Capstone course but can be implemented in any engineering capstone design course with systems-based engineering design process.

This module will be a precursor to using the Pugh matrix and conducting sensitivity analysis in the conceptual design phase of the capstone design project.

To select a concept, students must make connections between the function of the subcomponent and the physical form that can achieve the desired function. A concept is selected when a function is mapped to a physical form from a selection of forms that perform similar functions.

Time
Three weeks
Materials
The three similar concepts can be provided for participants to review, i.e. a Trash Picker, Dyson V8 and IRoomba.
Prerequisites
Prior exposure to the engineering design process, basic engineering knowledge
Description

In this card, we explore the ability of engineering students to make connections based on the entrepreneurial mindset learning (EML) framework. This module will be a precursor to using the Pugh matrix and conducting sensitivity analysis in the conceptual design phase of the capstone design project. The simple hook (template in resources section) describes the student teams as the management of a cleaning company bidding for a contract with a rental property company. In their proposal, they are required to select cleaning devices from a list based on their assumptions, create function views and form views of the selected devices, and then map function to form of the different subcomponents. They also identify aspects of distinction, and eventually give a budget for the cost to clean an apartment. Assessment rubric is via a proposal document to assess the teams. Furthermore, the students will implement the skill gathered to the design process of their capstone project.
