Instead of simply applying fundamental engineering to a set of design parameters, the students now investigate how their solutions connect to the customer’s needs as well as the value that their solutions create for society. Since I have added these tools to my course, I frequently find that the students are passionate about continuing to explore solutions to their projects after the course has ended. ” “ “ I left industry to come to academia because I thought I could have a positive impact on students.
