Thermodynamics - We need more power!
Updated: 6/14/2023 11:49 AM by Becky Benishek
Summary
Promote entrepreneurially-minded problem-solving in Thermodynamics by linking the application of power generating cycles with economic and environmental costs.
Description
This course module promotes entrepreneurially-minded problem-solving in Thermodynamics by linking the application of power generating cycles with economic and environmental costs. Students complete an iterative design process of an electric-generating power plant comparing performance, cost, and environmental effects as key metrics. Additionally, a socio-political aspect is instilled through “governmental regulations” introduced throughout the course of the project. This course module incorporates fundamental technical concepts such as Rankine Cycle, cycle modifications, and the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.
Learning Objectives
  1. Students will be able to develop and apply the basic laws of thermodynamics.
  2. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of undergraduate thermodynamics to develop appropriate design metrics for vapor power plant operation.
  3. Students will be able to analyze the performance of power generating cycles.
  4. Students will be able to formulate relationships between fundamental concepts and real-world application for power-generating cycles.
  5. Students will be able to apply thermodynamic principles to a multi-dimensional problem and generate technical solutions that maximize customer value.
  6. Students will be able to successfully integrate their technical solutions with economics, resulting in a product that is both cost efficient and functional.
  7. Students will develop the ability to effectively communicate, both written and orally, with their team members and the customer.
  8. Students will develop the skills to carry out an iterative design process.
